Common supplements used by IBS sufferers are described below. They can be obtained at health food stores or online stores. As a precaution, consult your physician before taking any new supplement.


Chamomile

Chamomile relaxes and tones the nervous system. It is often used when anxiety and tension cause digestive symptoms such as gas, colic pains or even ulcers. It is an antispasmodic, used for intestinal and menstrual cramps and relieving gas pains, since it loosens tight muscles.

Chamomile flowers are often used to make nice tasting tea. It can also be purchased in powdered form as pills and then be swallowed with a large glass of water.

Do not use if you are allergic to the Asteraceae (daisy) family (ragweed, aster and chrysanthemums).


Evening primrose oil

Evening primrose oil is a natural vegetable oil, derived from evening primrose seeds, which provides linoleic acid, gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and two Omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). It has a stimulating effect on the digestive system operation, as well as the liver and spleen.

Do not take if you have temporal lobe epilepsy. Use caution if your are taking anti-inflammatory drugs. It should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation.


Ginger

Ginger root is a medicinal herb that has been used as a digestive aid and for discomfort after eating, bloating, heartburn, flatulence, and nausea. It has also been used as a preventative for motion sickness.

Ginger is often taken as a tea made from the raw herb. Fresh raw ginger root is sometimes chewed or sliced up in a food dish. It can also be purchased in powdered form as pills and then be swallowed with a large glass of water.

Do not use if you have gallstones or if you are pregnant.


Peppermint

Peppermint oil's anti-spasmodic properties have been used to relieve alimentary canal pains. It has stimulating, stomachic, and carminative actions which are used for dyspepsia, flatulence, colic and stomach cramps.

Do not use this herb if you have chronic heartburn, severe liver damage, gallbladder inflammation, obstruction of bile ducts, or if you are pregnant.


If you are having strong IBS symptoms, you may need to start with a very bland diet and gradually add foods, while assessing their reaction on your system. Avoid foods that cause IBS symptoms.

It is vitally important to restore balance to your system. This can be done through simple dietary and lifestyle changes, depending on the specific type of imbalance found in your system.
